About Nancy

Welcome to my website.  Thank you for visiting today.

Most of you know me from our mutual involvement in the world of decorative painting.  For those of you who do not, allow me to introduce myself and my art.

I have been painting 35 years and am known for heirloom quality of painting on antique tinware. I have always been fascinated by antique tin and the painting styles that originated in the 1700’s on items such as document, keeping boxes and coffee pots. My earliest pieces were completed in similar method of stroke work, using oil paints mixed with varnish applied with a French quill brush. However, when I was introduced to the soft blended style of the late Joan Johnson I was intrigued  by her unique way of blending beautiful colors. This represented a turning point in the development of my personal style. My palette is not the primary colors as the originals but are a variety of jewel tones consisting of opulent greens and rich reds on mostly dark backgrounds as exampled on these pages.

In the early years, I would purchase old tin that others may have considered undesirable by of its condition or style.  These items would require extensive time in cleaning and preparation before decorating with a design.  It was particularly rewarding to take these pieces destined for the junk pile and revive them for a new use. What began as an interest in obtaining unique pieces upon which to paint, quickly evolved into a sincere appreciation of the artistry of the construction as well as the history of these hand crafted, antique items. It is very interesting to have learned the age and origin of the piece by studying the type of hinge, knob and even the manner in which a spout is attached. Searching for tin has become a hobby for both my husband, Whitie, and me.  We travel to auctions, antique shops near and far in search of unique pieces of tin. In the last several years, the truly unusual are becoming increasing more difficult to find and when found can be costly.

I have been honored by the awards, publications and inspired by the affiliations listed below:

The Holidays at Nancy’s

Happy New Year!  Welcome to my new website. This is the first of many blog sessions. Also from time to time I will be adding other items of interest such as how I use my personal collection of painted tinware in hopes of inspiring you to display your art work in your homes.

I have exciting news! My sled has been featured in the February 2012 issue of Paint Works. The sled is antique and I have used in in my home. It is a wonderful piece to be placed by a door or fireplace.  The painting instructions and pattern is available in the article and can be used for another large piece such as a wall hanging.

Feel free to share your thoughts and ideas.
