Hello Everyone!
Although I love to painting on tin, I really enjoy having a few pieces of original painted pieces. This photo shows some examples of my collection. Two of the larger pieces are document boxes. The one to the right has an interesting japanned finish versus the typical black background. The sugar canister is one of my favorite because of its unusual shape, little knob and the feet. Much of the original paint is still present for the admiration. When looking at such pieces, I often wonder about tinsmiths that fashioned the pieces and the painters that decorated them how the felt about their work. I am sure that they had no idea that their works would live for over an hundred years past the creation. They most likely would marvel that these pieces are still in existence as treasures not utilitarian items. Today if we need to store documents, we would purchase something from our local office supply store to do the job. This would be something disposable and temporary with little style or character.
